With all commercial vessels over 300GRT required to have an AIS transponder, AIS is becoming an important "must have" technology for all leisure users. In simple terms, nearby
ships and other vessels equipped with AIS are overlaid onto your chartplotter screen together with details of their identity, name and call sign. It greatly reduces the risk of
collision. There are many advantages over the cost and complexity of adding a dedicated radar system on board a small yacht. It is also being increasingly used for yacht
racing and tracking applications as well as vessel security.
